You Get to Make the Rules
Somewhere along the way, many of us started living as if someone else handed us a rulebook.
Go to school. Get a job. Stay safe. Don’t dream too big. Don’t take too many risks. Be realistic.
But who decided those were the rules?
The older I get, the more I realize that most of the “rules” we follow aren’t actually rules at all. They’re opinions. Expectations. Traditions. Fears that have been passed down from one person to the next until they start feeling like facts.
The truth is, life gives us more freedom than we often allow ourselves to believe.
You get to make the rules.
That doesn’t mean you can control everything that happens to you. Life will always surprise you. There will be setbacks, disappointments, and things that are completely outside of your control. But you do get to decide how you respond. You get to decide what kind of life you’re creating.
The world looks different depending on what you’re looking for. If you’re constantly searching for reasons why life is unfair, you’ll find them. If you’re looking for opportunities, you’ll find those too. Neither perspective tells the whole story, but the one you choose to focus on shapes your experience. Our attention is powerful. It influences what we notice, how we interpret situations, and the choices we make next. What we consistently focus on has a way of becoming the reality we live inside.
Being yourself is one of the bravest things you can do. Fear has a funny way of convincing us that we need to earn the right to be ourselves. It tells us to shrink. To blend in. To wait until we’re more successful, more confident, more attractive, or more accepted. But authenticity doesn’t come after confidence. Authenticity creates confidence. The more you stop performing for everyone else, the less power fear has over your decisions.
Being yourself won’t make everyone like you. It will help you like yourself. And that’s a much stronger foundation to build a life on.
Life is like a game. Every game has rules, patterns, and strategies. Life does too. The more you understand yourself, your habits, your mindset, and your environment, the better you’ll become at navigating it. Sometimes you’ll win. Sometimes you’ll lose. Sometimes you’ll have to start over. None of those moments mean the game is over. They simply mean you’re learning how to play.
Fear doesn’t have to be the main character. Imagine if every decision you made came from curiosity instead of fear. What would you try? Where would you go? Who would you become? Fear will probably always have something to say. You don’t have to give it the final vote.
Write Your Own Rules
Maybe your rules look like this:
- I choose peace over proving myself.
- I celebrate progress instead of perfection.
- I don’t need everyone’s approval to trust myself.
- I can change my mind when I learn something new.
- I define success on my own terms.
- Rest is productive.
- Joy is not something I have to earn.
- I don’t have to live the life someone else imagined for me.
Your rules don’t have to make sense to anyone else. They just have to help you become the person you want to be. Maybe that’s the secret. Life isn’t about finding the perfect path. It’s about creating one that feels true to you. There isn’t a universal blueprint for happiness, success, or fulfillment. There are only choices, lessons, detours, and opportunities to begin again.
So if you’ve been waiting for permission to dream bigger, start over, take a different route, or become the version of yourself you’ve been hiding… Consider this your reminder. You get to make the rules. And that might be the most freeing realization of all.
