The Inside Job of Dying to Self

The Inside Job of Dying to Self

In the Bible, you are told to Deny yourself (Matthew 16:24). No, this doesn’t mean to stop being who you are. We are all made unique by God, and he doesn’t want us to change that. It isn’t self-rejection either! It means we need to put away the selfishness, the pride, and all things that keep us from being Christ-like. It is about learning to look at others before yourself. Learning to Love even the toughest people, and being completely in LOVE with him. By loving him you will love all! Dying to Self is one of the hardest things you have to do. It is a daily struggle and to be honest, you fail a lot! But, God gives you the encouragement, the guidance, and love you need to succeed. It is an inside job!

The Journey that we all face as True Believers of Jesus (Yeshua) is extremely hard. If it is not hard for you, then you are doing something wrong. I say that because in the bible anyone who has dedicated their life wholeheartedly to God has had it rough. Now when I say rough, I don’t mean this in a bad way. I mean it as a battle with self. A battle with you being able to be what The Lord has made you to be. Not everyone can accept that. Not everyone is going to accept the person who seems to be happy all the time or the person who isn’t confrontational. Or even the passionate person. They may look at you as weak or that you are hiding your true feelings. Many times they may think you are crazy believing in something like this. But, that is just who you are, it is who you have been reshaped to be by God.

That is where Dying to Self comes in. It is a lifelong journey that we all must take. It is walking the straight and narrow path that he has put forth for us. It is becoming someone who solely relies on The Lord for everything they need and desire. Of course, someone will get that twisted and say, “doesn’t he want you to work and think for yourself”? Yes, he does! But, he wants us to realize we need him. He brings us all good things. He gives us everything we need, and he will bless us as long as we follow him. In order to properly follow him, we have to keep his commandments and the greatest one being to LOVE! We need to deny the flesh which is our worldly nature and set our focus on his spiritual nature. Which is heavenly, loving, kind, generous. Basically producing the good fruits of The Spirit.

How do you Die to Self? As Jesus said,”Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me” (Matthew 16:24).He is saying you give up your old self and live by the new one. Only he can give you that new self. He does this by giving you the Holy Spirit and Renewing your mind. You will think less of yourself and more of others. You no longer are self-obsessed instead, you are content with who you have become in Christ. No longer will you stress, fear, or give into the temptations in front of you.

John 12:24 gives a good analogy of dying to self. “Very truly I tell you, unless a kernel of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains only a single seed. But if it dies, it produces many seeds.” This tells me that if I don’t give up my old selfish and prideful desires, I wont grow in Christ. From the bottom of my heart I want to grow and produce the fruits that I should to honor God.

It is a task that you will deal with everyday. But, to be able to succeed in this lifestyle you must take it one day at a time. Even one simple act at a time. Look at it this way, if you learn to deny your cravings, or spending what you don’t have, or worrying about something you can’t fix, it will be easier to lean on God when something that requires a lot of faith happens. It prepares you for what can cause your faith to be shaken. You will be able to handle even the toughest things. In doing this he will honor your efforts. He will meet every need you may have or not even know you need. But, none the less it is a gift. A gift out of love.

Have you denied yourself? Why or why not? How has this journey been for you? I can’t wait to hear from you guys!

God Bless You

I love this. I often find it hard to deny myself in certain areas of life. I think it’s because I’m getting caught up in the tasks of life. I will work on it and continue to be better everyday.

Thank you. I really try to speak from the guidance of my Spirit and I think about what will trigger someone into thinking deeper into a topic.
