How a Prayer Journal can help you
Through the years I developed a love for writing. Not just the typical blog posts or the assignments for school, but the act of writing to express my feelings. It has really given me the mental and emotional clarity that I have needed. But, it has done something else too! It has boosted me spiritually. What I mean by that is, it has opened my eyes, my heart, my mind, and my spirit. It has given me so much more confidence and comfort in my relationship with the Lord.
Of course everyone has had a diary or a journal of some sort. This would tell all your feelings and the thoughts you didn’t want anyone to know about. For me, it often stayed in my mind. This was not healthy at all. Over time it starts to build up into a pile that eventually turns into a wall. Can you imagine that feeling? It hurts. It feels like you are a big ball of emotions that can’t release. When it does, it is a flood that leaves everything in its path damaged. I have been there many times over the years. I know many people can relate. It has nothing to do with age, or gender. It really is a situation that anyone and everyone can experience.
How did I begin using a prayer journal? Well, I wanted to keep record of my prayers at first. Just to see how far I have come. But, then it turned into a deeper need. I felt like I could write more than what I could actually say. Meaning I didn’t know how to talk to God about certain things. I was not sure how to word my prayers. I started to over think them and they became repetitive. I know that is something he would not want. He wants me to be confident in my prayers. He wants me to be able to say what I feel without fear and over analyzing everything.
So, I picked up a notebook and began writing. It started it off slow with just a page of writing every few days. I would write the things I desired. Not really sure on what I was doing. After a few months, I looked through my pages and had a breakthrough. I was treating my prayer like a wish list. I wasn’t talking about my feelings, or my emotions. It was all about what I wanted and needed. I felt like I had disappointed the Lord. But, quickly I realized I had to experience that to understand the true nature of the relationship. Yes, we can ask him for things. Our wants and desires are ok. But, he also wants to hear about the good and the bad. He wants to know how you feel. He wants to answer your questions. Most importantly he wants you to praise him. This is a way to show him our need of him and him only. He gives us all good things. Praising him through the good the bad and the ugly, shows him our appreciation and devotion to him.
So I began to write differently, and it helped me to be able to verbally pray better. Now I can talk to him with love in my heart and praise in my voice. Every day I am so thankful that I get to learn something new about myself and this life that we live. Its gets better and all I need to do is continue to grow in him.
Here are the ways a prayer journal can help you:
- Builds confidence in prayer.
- Helps you understand what you are praying for and how you may be holding back.
- It teaches you what changes you need to make in your journey.
- You can see the changes you have made over time.
- Your relationship with God will change. This happens over time. He lets you go through certain phases and processes in life to open your heart to him.
- You are able to evaluate and understand your true self.
- You break down the walls and barriers you once had within.
Yes I could list more reasons, but I think it is best to see it for yourself. Everyone has a different goal, a different reason, and a different journey. But in the end you will end up in a better space to pray and know the words to say when you talk to God!
Do you have a prayer journal? Do you feel like it has helped you in your spiritual relationship?
God Bless YOU!
